Sikkim bestowed with ‘ 100 Organic & Crime Free State ’ recognition by World Book of Records London 

   Hailed as a land of peace and tranquility, Sikkim – the Northeast State of India lately has been bestowed with the recognition by the World Book of Records, London for being the ‘ World’s first organic state. The recognition highlights the fact that Sikkim came the first state in the world to apply a 100 organic policy. Along with this, Sikkim has also been recognised as the ‘ Crime free state ’ by the World Book of Records London. 

 100 Organic! First Indian State to achieve the feat 

  The story of success commenced in the time 2016 when Sikkim came India’s first 100 organic state. This has been possible with the State’s policy to exclude the use of synthetic fertilisers and fungicides, further furnishing access to safer food choices and making husbandry a more terrain-friendly exertion. From 2016 on, the state has been bestowed with colorful recognitions including the prestigious Future Policy Gold Award from the UN Food and Agriculture( FAO), after beating 51 nominations from around the globe. 

 When does it all start? 

  An admixture of the Himalayas, timbers, ranges and Steep Mountains – Sikkim has a fragile ecosystem. In 2003, Chief Minister Pawan Chamling envisaged Sikkim to be India’s first organic state. To work towards this target, the state launched the “ Organic Mission, ” an action plan in 2010 that defined the measures to be enforced in order to reach the target of converting the entire state to organic. It's material to note that between 2010- 2014, budget allocation was concentrated on erecting the capacity of growers, pastoral service providers, instrument bodies, and supporting growers in acquiring instrument. On the other side, enterprise were accepted to supply quality organic seeds to the growers to further strengthen original organic seed development and product.

  The state policy has emphasised considerably enhancing soil fertility, conserving water quality, and adding biodiversity at the field and geography position. The government also took way to ameliorate soil health operation and extended support to growers to perform soil tests per time. Not only this, but the policy also gradationally phase out subventions for synthetic inputs with a conversion strategy that involved training growers on how to produce organic inputs. The National Organic Farming Research Institute was established in 2016 to give specialized support to organic product systems, not only in Sikkim but in the whole North East Hills Region of India.
