First government eye bank with modern facilities in the Banaras region
Varanasi. "BHU Eye Bank" has been started in the chain of providing state-of-the-art facilities in the Regional Eye Institute located at the Institute of Medical Sciences of Banaras Hindu University. Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University Prof. VK Shukla inaugurated BHU I Bank on Wednesday 22nd June 2022. During this L.V. Dr. Prashant Garg, President, Cornea, Prasad Eye Institute was the special guest. During this Prof. VK Shukla and Dr. Garg inspected the eye bank and inquired about all the machines through which cornea transplant is done. During this, he was also shown the microprocessing method of a cornea transplant.
Eye Bank used to work in BHU earlier also, but it was not available with state-of-the-art and innovative technology. The biggest challenge was the lack of techniques to measure the quality of the transplanted cornea, which often led to the assumption that the transplanted cornea would only enhance vision. Apart from this, it was also not known which cornea can be used for eyesight and which can be used for the strength of the eye wall. Most importantly, it is the first government eye bank in the Banaras region and that too is equipped with the latest facilities. Along with this, the employees here have also been trained in new methods, which are expected to benefit a large population.
Addressing the inaugural function of Eye Bank, Prof. VK Shukla said that there are many misconceptions in society regarding eye donation, which need to be removed. At times, despite the availability of cornea, lack of technology, and availability of technology, lack of cornea becomes a challenge for doctors and trouble for patients. The solution to the challenge of technology is BHU I Bank, but for the second challenge, widespread awareness among the people is essential.
Director of the Institute of Medical Sciences Prof. SK Singh explained with statistics how serious the problem of blindness is in India. In such a situation, the Regional Eye Institute, BHU, and Eye Bank can play a very important role here. Deputy Director of National Blindness Control Program Y. Of. Pathak said that the Institute of Medical Sciences of Banaras Hindu University is the main center of health services. In such a situation, BHU I Bank can bring a big change.
L.V., working president of Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. Dr. Prashant Garg said that the training of doctors and staff is paramount for the success of any eye bank and LV Prasad Eye Institute is gladly ready for it.
