Department of Linguistics, Banaras Hindu University officially inaugurated the 49th AICDL and International Symposium

Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Arts welcomes all linguists and linguistics enthusiasts to the three-day symposium

VARANASI :The Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Arts, Banaras Hindu University in collaboration with Dravidian Linguistic Association (Trivandrum), Central Institute of Indian Languages (Mysuru), Indian Council of Philosophical Research (New Delhi), Anthropological Survey of India (Kolkata) & Vasanta College for Women (Rajghat, Varanasi) celebrated the inauguration of the three-day 49th All India Conference of Dravidian Linguists and International Symposium at the Malviya Mulya Anushilan Kendra, (Near Proctor’s Office) BHU.

The Organising Secretary, Dr. Abhinav Kumar Mishra, formally welcomed the dignitaries present on the dais - chief guest Prof. Vijay Kumar Shukla (Rector, BHU), guest of honor Prof. Vijay Bahadur Singh (Dean, Faculty of Arts, BHU), Prof. R. C. Sharma (President, DLA), keynote speaker Prof. G. Uma Maheshwar Rao (President, LSI), and special guests Prof. K. Karunakaran (Hon. Chairman, ISDL), Dr. Tariq Khan (Junior Research Officer, CIIL), Prof. G. K. Panikkar (Director, ISDL and Dean, DLA), Dr. Amit Kumar Ghosh (Supdt. Anthropologist, ANSI), Prof. Sachidanand Mishra (Member-Secretary, ICPR) and Prof. Alka Singh (Principal, Vasanta College for Women, Rajghat, Varanasi).

The dignitaries spoke about the representative organizations and their interest areas in the field of linguistics. They addressed the interdisciplinary nature of linguistics with newly emerging disciplines like cognitive linguistics, forensic linguistics, neurolinguistics, and language and law. There was an emphasis on the vast linguistic landscape of South Asia with mentions of Dravidian Linguistics, Indian Grammar, and the Indian Language Knowledge System. Mentioning the preservation of endangered dialects, they also addressed Language Documentation and Preservation. The dignitaries noted the Government of India's initiatives National Translation Mission, Scheme for Protection and Preservation of Endangered Languages, and Bharatvani Project that work towards preserving, protecting, and promoting knowledge of Indian Languages and endangered languages and dialects.

The Chief Guest, Prof. Vijay Kumar Shukla, released the books - Grammar of Ramacharitham by Prof. Naduvattom Gopalakrishnan, Tagore’s Gitanjali: Its truth, beauty and significance and influence on Malayalam Literature by K. Jayakumar I.A.S., Mappila Migrants in Andamans - A Socio-linguistic Study by Dr. N. Muraleedharan Nair, and A Socio-cultural, historical and linguistic Study of the Pathans of Kerala by Dr. S. Abdul Samed. Following this, he presented awards to noteworthy contributors.

Following the event, Dr. Praveen Gatla, Assistant Professor, Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Arts, BHU, offered a vote of thanks to all guests and participants for gracing the occasion with their solemn presence.
