BHU : The Nationwide Glaucoma awareness week was celebrated in the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology BHU. The week long celebrations included screening camps, awareness by means of films, free intraocular pressure assessments and general pamphlet distribution detailing the common symptoms and effects like visual field defects, colour vision defects and uncommon headaches.
The silent nature of the disease of glaucoma, which leads to irreversible blindness, was underlined during the celebration.
The week culminated on the 14th of March 2022 with a “glaucoma awareness walk” that was flagged off by the rector of Banaras Hindu University Prof. V.K. Shukla along with the dean of the modern medicine Prof. S.K. Singh. Large number of students and patients’ attendants were part of the procession carrying banners and placards. Prof. M.K. Singh the Chief of RIO, Prof. V.P. Singh and Dr. Deepak Mishra Associate Professor were leading the procession.
It comprised of students, nurses, patients, and the faculty of the Eye Department. The Head of the Department Prof. Prashant Bhushan has appealed to all the young people of Varanasi to spread the word of relevance of eye checkups for Glaucoma detection among the masses.
